North Goa has a reputation it doesn't fully deserve. Yes, the beach shacks. Yes, the music. But five kilometres inland, or five hours past noon, most of it is quiet.

We keep a short list, not for everyone, of places that are best when nobody's there. A lane in Assagao lined with rain trees. The seawall at Coco Beach at low tide, where the fishermen come in without ceremony. A café in Siolim whose only sign is a chalkboard. A bookshop in Aldona. The road to the ferry at Chorao, especially on a monsoon afternoon.

None of these are secrets. All of them are quieter when you go early. If Goa has taught us anything, it's that the crowd is a matter of timing, not geography.
